The Job Market: Is a College Degree Worth Less?
This article is about the increase in the amount of people that go to college and receive degrees over the years. The question that stands is, is a college degree worth less since everyone is getting it? This article states how now everything thinks they should automatically go to college because that is what "everyone else is doing" but college is not meant for some. Some people are better off working in trades. The price of college has increased significantly over the years. Students have to take out loans to afford it, and more and more people each year are going into debt just because of paying for college. This article is saying that one has to do more than just go to college, since the job market is so competitive. You have to have other things to build your resume so you stand out. This made me think we all must keep an open mind. If we are going to spend thousands of dollars a year, we should be picking a career path we are likely to receive a job in. The majority of jobs you do not need a degree for so why does everyone feel the need to attend a four year university? The article says that people feel they are more likely to receive a job with a degree. The people with the degree tend to get the job over those without. Just because they received a degree does not necessarily make the person more knowledgable about the area of subject, it just makes that person more marketable. The problem this all is causing is the expense and debt it is putting out country into. If less people went to college, there would be less debt to pay back and people would receive pay checks faster because they wouldn't be spending time at college. They would be able to save their pay checks or spend them instead of paying off their debt they would receive from going to college. This could have helped our economy in pulling our nation out of debt. Part of me does not agree with this article but part of me does. I agree with the fact that not everyone needs to go to college and that it causes our nation and individuals to be in debt, however it is that persons decision whether they want to do this. If you can afford to go to college or you think it will better you in the long run that is your decision. Some are fortunate enough that they will not come out of college with loans because they personally either have the money or have a loved one who is paying for them to attend college. I personally think furthering my education will help me out in the long run to support myself and it will help me receive a better job. This topic is a highly debated topic. The reality is students who do not attend college will not earn as much as those who do and are at greater risk of unemployment. It is said students should be encouraged to go into vocational fields but over the years courses interesting students in these fields have been cut so the opportunities to show students what they are all about have disappeared. This article seemed to fighting for people to go to college but at the same time fighting against it. College can help one out in the long run was the message it seemed to be giving off. One statement said at the beginning of the article was, "many of the students who drop out of college are blacks or non-white Hispanics." I found this statement very interesting. The article almost seemed to shift the idea that these specific races should go into vocational fields. I believe that everyone should be able to make their decision for themselves and just because of your race it should not be forced on you what you should or should not do.
